The latest version introduces a complete under-the-hood transformation, bringing new engines, a dedicated cloud computer per notebook, and highly customizable output formats that make it a serious tool for researchers, students, and content creators. New AI Engines: Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity
NotebookLM now runs on a dual-engine architecture. The primary engine is a version of Gemini 3.5 — likely the Flash-Lite variant, though Google hasn't specified exactly which iteration. Alongside it sits Antigravity, an engine optimized for coding and structured reasoning. Together, they provide greater accuracy, more reliable reasoning, and clearer visibility into the model's thought process during chats. When you start a new notebook, you'll notice that research steps are more transparent, with sources shown and the research pathway visible.
Per-Notebook Cloud Computer
A major architectural change: every notebook now gets its own isolated cloud computer. Previously, resources were shared across your entire account. Now, each notebook operates in a sandboxed environment with dedicated compute power. This means you can write and run code, perform complex analyses, and process heavy documents without interference. The built-in system also includes over 100 carefully selected programming skills that help the AI understand uploaded sources more deeply, from financial statements to academic papers.
Deep Research with Source Inspection
The research workflow is now far more precise. When you ask NotebookLM to find information, it no longer randomly pulls from the web. You can give it specific, granular instructions: "Search only on government websites ending in .gov," or "Exclude Wikipedia, use only primary sources." The AI respects these constraints. Once results appear, you can open the Source Kit to preview each source before selecting it. This lets you quickly verify the domain, skim the content, and decide whether to include it. You can delete irrelevant sources (like a mistakenly included Algerian website when you requested Moroccan archives) and then dive deeper into each one individually.
New Output Formats and Visuals
NotebookLM can now generate a wider range of formatted outputs. You can request:
Images: Created by Nano Banana, the tool now produces images in PNG, JPEG, and GIF formats, including animations. Background-free SVG and PNG assets are also supported for data visualizations and diagrams.
Documents: Outputs include TXT, Markdown, DOCX (Word), and PDF. You can generate polished reports, budgets, student worksheets, and more, all ready to download and edit.
Structured data: Previously limited to JSON, the tool now supports CSV export and, crucially, native Microsoft Office formats — Excel (XLSX) and PowerPoint (PPTX). This means you can generate data tables and slide decks directly.
Slide Bar: Instead of an editable HTML presentation, the current slide output is image-based (via Nano Banana), so it's not yet directly editable. Expect a future HTML-format update for full customization.
Editable Flashcards
Flashcards received one of the most requested upgrades: you can now edit individual cards. Click the three-dot menu on any card and select Edit Flash Card. Modify the question, answer, or add additional details. This allows you to tailor study material precisely, removing or expanding information as needed.
Mind Maps and Audio Overview
Mind maps are now cleaner and more readable. The layout is less cluttered, and the exported image quality is significantly improved, making them useful for presentations and reference. Audio overviews (the two-voice interview-style discussions) remain unchanged in quality but are now downloadable. You can also generate a short-form video overview (around 2 minutes) summarizing the content — essentially an auto-generated reel for social media. Note: language output depends on your prompt; specify "in Arabic" if needed, as the default tends to be English.
Limitations and What’s Next
While most output types are editable, the slide bar and certain quiz formats still lack direct editing. Google is expected to evolve these into fully interactive HTML versions, which would make them dramatically more useful and cost-efficient. The current image-based approach works, but editable code would be a game-changer.
